8,000 watch hours or 20M Shorts views: which YPP path is realistic?

You only need to clear one of the two monetization paths. One rewards steady uploading, the other rewards hit rate. Here is how to tell which one your channel is actually near.

The Partner Program has two doors and you only have to walk through one. Alongside 1,000 subscribers you need either the watch-hour threshold or the Shorts-view threshold — and both double on 1 February 2027.

Public Shorts views10M20Mrolling 90 days

Most people pick the path that sounds easier and then spend six months finding out it wasn't. The choice is worth making on arithmetic.

The two paths are not two difficulties of the same thing

They are different businesses.

  • 8,000 watch hours in 365 days is about 22 hours of watch time a day, sustained for a year. At a 4-minute average view duration that is roughly 330 views a day — a number a mid-sized channel with a working format reaches by publishing consistently.
  • 20M Shorts views in 90 days is about 222,000 Shorts views a day, sustained for three months. That is not a harder version of the first channel; it is a volume-and-virality operation.

The windows matter as much as the numbers. A 365-day window is forgiving: a good month in March is still helping you in December. A 90-day window is brutal in both directions — one Short that does 5M views carries you for three months and then stops carrying you, all at once, whether or not you have replaced it.

Shorts views do not become watch hours

This is the single most common misreading of the requirements, and it is expensive.

Watch time from Shorts does not count toward the public watch-hour threshold. The paths are separate on purpose. A channel that posts Shorts daily can accumulate millions of views and still read 0 progress on the watch-hour bar, because none of that time is eligible for it.

A few related details worth knowing before you count your own total:

  • Watch time only counts from public videos. Private, unlisted and deleted videos take their hours with them.
  • Public live stream watch time does count toward the watch-hour threshold.
  • Shorts views count only public Shorts, over the trailing 90 days.
  • You can mix formats freely — you just get assessed against whichever single path you clear, not a blend of the two.

How to tell which path you are actually near

Compare the two gaps as a fraction of the target rather than in absolute units. "I need 2,000 more hours" and "I need 14 million more Shorts views" are not comparable numbers until you express both as percentage of the bar still to climb and as the pace that implies.

Run both. The honest test is:

  1. Current 365-day watch hours ÷ 4,000 — how far through the long-form door are you?
  2. Current 90-day Shorts views ÷ 10M — how far through the Shorts door are you?
  3. Do both again against 8,000 and 20M, which is the world after 1 February 2027.
  4. Convert each remaining gap into a per-day pace over the days you have left, and ask which of the two you have ever actually sustained.

That last question decides it. A channel that has never done 50,000 Shorts views in a day is not 20M-in-90-days away from monetization; it is a different channel away from it.

The YPP 2027 countdown tool runs all four calculations side by side on your own figures and shows the gap and required daily pace on both paths, before and after the change. You type in three numbers from Studio — there is nothing to connect and no sign-in.

The practical answer for most channels

If you have any long-form library at all, the watch-hour path is the one that responds to effort. Watch hours accumulate from consistency: a format that works, published on a schedule, with average view duration defended. Progress is incremental and it does not evaporate for three months at a time.

The Shorts path makes sense when you are already a Shorts channel — when your trailing 90 days are in the millions, not the thousands, and your problem is closing a gap rather than opening one.

A reasonable hedge: push the watch-hour path as your qualifying route, and treat Shorts as discovery that feeds subscribers and long-form views rather than as a second route to the bar.

For what changes in February, who is exempt, and the rolling-window mechanics in full, read the 2027 YouTube Partner Program requirements, explained. If you have settled on the watch-hour path, the daily pace you need to hit 4,000 and 8,000 has the arithmetic.

Requirements as announced by YouTube on 10 August 2026. Per-day figures are arithmetic on those thresholds; because both windows roll, treat every pace figure as a floor rather than a target.
